Getting Started: General Questions

1. What is Paint by Numbers?

Paint by Numbers (PBN) is a relaxing, creative hobby where you apply paint to a pre-printed canvas. The canvas is divided into sections, each marked with a number corresponding to a specific paint color. You match the number on the canvas to the number on the paint pot and fill in the space. It's like a coloring book but with paint!

2. What is Diamond Painting?

Diamond Painting is a mesmerizing craft combining elements of cross-stitch and paint-by-numbers. Instead of paint, you use tiny, faceted "drills" (or diamonds) to create a sparkling, mosaic-like artwork. You use an applicator pen to pick up the drills and place them onto a color-coded adhesive canvas according to a symbol chart.

3. What's the difference between Paint by Numbers and Diamond Painting?

While both are guided art hobbies, the main difference is the medium.

  • Paint by Numbers uses liquid paint and brushes to create a traditional painting.
  • Diamond Painting uses tiny, sparkling resin drills and an applicator pen to create a textured, glittering mosaic.

Think of it this way. PBN results in a classic, matte painting, while DP results in a shimmery, textured artwork that catches the light beautifully.

4. Which hobby is better for a beginner?

Both are extremely beginner-friendly! The choice comes down to personal preference.

  • Choose Paint by Numbers if: You enjoy the feeling of painting, like working with brushes, and prefer a classic art piece.
  • Choose Diamond Painting if: You love sparkle and glitter, enjoy repetitive and meditative tasks, and want a piece with amazing texture and shine.

Many people enjoy both!

Paint by Numbers Specific FAQs

6. Do I need to add water to the paint?

No! Our acrylic paints are pre-mixed and ready to use straight from the pot. They are thick enough to provide excellent coverage. If a pot seems slightly dry, add one tiny drop of water at a time and stir thoroughly. Be careful not to add too much because it can make the paint runny and transparent.

7. I painted the wrong number! How can I fix it?

Don't panic! Let the wrong color dry completely. Once dry, you can paint over it with the correct color. Our acrylic paints are opaque and provide excellent coverage.

8. What's the best way to paint to avoid mistakes?

  • Start with the darkest colors first and work your way to the lightest. This prevents smudging.
  • Paint one color at a time. Finish all the areas for one number before moving to the next.
  • Use a smaller brush for detailed areas and a larger one for big sections.
  • Wash your brushes thoroughly with water between colors.

9. My finished painting has visible numbers or lines showing through. What can I do?

This can happen with lighter colors. To ensure full coverage, apply a second coat once the first is dry. For a professional finish and to make the colors pop, we recommend applying a clear varnish or sealant once your masterpiece is completely dry.

10. How do I frame my finished Paint by Numbers?

Once your painting is completely dry (and varnished, if you choose), you can frame it like any other canvas or poster. You can:

  • Stretch it over wooden stretcher bars for a gallery wrap look.
  • Place it in a standard picture frame (you may need to remove the glass to avoid damaging the paint texture).

Diamond Painting Specific FAQs

11. What's the difference between Round and Square drills?

This depends on personal preference!

  • Round Drills: Easier and faster to pick up and apply. They leave small gaps between the drills, giving the finished piece a more traditional "mosaic" look.
  • Square Drills: Fit together perfectly with no gaps, creating a fuller, more seamless, and glittery look. They require more precision to place, but many crafters love the sharp, complete image they create.

12. What does "DMC" mean?

DMC is a world-famous embroidery thread brand, and its color-numbering system has become the universal standard for Diamond Painting. When you see a DMC number on your legend or drill bag, it refers to a specific, standardized color. This makes it easy to buy replacement drills if you run out.

13. My canvas has wrinkles. How do I flatten it?

Wrinkled canvases are common from shipping. To flatten it:

  • Best Method: Lay the canvas face down on a clean, flat surface. Place a thin towel over it and iron it on a low-heat setting. Do not use steam!
  • Alternative Method: Place heavy books (or other flat, heavy objects) on the canvas for 24-48 hours.

14. The adhesive on my canvas isn't sticky anymore. What can I do?

If the canvas is left uncovered, dust can reduce its stickiness. You can buy a special diamond painting adhesive spray to re-stick the area. To prevent this, always use the protective plastic sheet to cover your canvas when not working on it.

15. I lost some of my diamonds! Can I get more?

Absolutely! We offer free drill replacements for any kit purchased from us. Just contact our support team with your order number and the DMC numbers of the drills you need.

16. How do I seal my finished Diamond Painting?

Sealing is optional but recommended to protect your work and lock the drills in place, especially if you plan to frame it without glass. You can purchase a special Diamond Painting sealant (brush-on or spray-on). Apply it according to the product instructions. Note that sealants can slightly reduce the sparkle of the drills.

Tips, Tricks & Best Practices

17. How should I store my project when I'm not working on it?

For both PBN and DP, the best way to store your work-in-progress is to roll it carefully with the image facing outwards and secure it with a rubber band. Store it in the tube it came in. For Diamond Painting, always place the plastic cover sheet back on the canvas before rolling to protect the adhesive and keep drills from falling.

18. What's the best lighting for these hobbies?

Good lighting is key to reducing eye strain and seeing the numbers and symbols clearly. A bright, neutral white light is best. Many crafters invest in an LED light pad to place under their canvas, illuminating the symbols from below and making them easy to see.

19. Are these hobbies good for anxiety and stress?

Yes! Both Paint by Numbers and Diamond Painting are praised for their therapeutic benefits. The focused, repetitive nature of the tasks can help quiet the mind, reduce stress, improve concentration, and provide a sense of accomplishment as you watch your masterpiece come to life.
